What's the cheapest way of travelling in Eastern Europe (Budapest, Vienna, Prague)?

And travelling near cities for a two week trip I'm planning.

Eurorail pass (I'm from America)? Bus? Train at night? What's the cheapest way of travelling in Eastern Europe (Budapest, Vienna, Prague)?
Most likely the bus, although within the different countries the train is often very cheap too.

Vienna will stand out as much more expensive and so it rail and bus travel within Austria.

Rail travel across borders is much more expensive, so when going from one country to an other the bus is the cheapest option.

A Eurail pass is most likely not cheaper, only when you spend all your time in the trains it will be cheaper.

Sleeping an overnight train can be done, from Prague to either Budapest or Vienna, (or the other way round,) but mostly you can do the train trips by day, and the bus certainly, and enjoy the countryside while traveling.
I`d take the bus , the cities are not that far apart. Are you on your own? Maybe you could check with some car rentals agencies, it can even be cheaper and you can travel independantly.

Btw, Vienna is not in eastern Europe ;-)What's the cheapest way of travelling in Eastern Europe (Budapest, Vienna, Prague)?
I would recommend you take the overnight trains. Buses may be cheaper but on the overnight train you are saving a nights accomodation and will be more comfortable than on the train. It will also be quicker which I guess you probably want since your only going for two weeks and probably want to see as much as possible.
