How safe is the EuraRail?

My friend and I are travelling around Europe and we figured that the EuroRail was the cheapest way to travel from place to place. Unfortunately my friend is really anal and afraid its unsafe lol.

If it is not safe are there any other good ways for us to get around considering I'm 18 and can't driveHow safe is the EuraRail?
It is very safe. The rail system in Europe is very reliable and used by everyone (business travelers, families with children, people traveling alone). If you do come across issues, every train has conductors (somewhat like flight attendants). You will not have any problems.
I think that most of western europe is pretty safe. I wouldn't go blindly into it, however. You need to be aware during your journey and although there are train conductors, there are not any babysitters/baggagesitters. You should get a backpack that can lock to the seat/rack and only store non-valuable/replaceable items in this pack - always assume it can be stolen at any moment. You should have a small day pack/purse with your money/cc/id/passport in that is a security bag, slash proof exomesh, slash proof strap etc. like this one http://www.corporatetravelsafety.com/cat鈥?/a>

There are people who will get up right before a stop and walk down the aisle, tug at bags and steal which ever one comes gliding off the rack - and then get off at that stop and be gone before you can even say "Pardon, Conductor!".

Driving through the backcountry of any country would be far more unsafe than train travel - you could be carjacked at any time, breakdown, run out of gas etc.

Eurail is pretty cheap, safe etc. however I don't know how much that extends deeply into eastern europe....(slovakia, latvia, poland, serbia, ukraine etc. ) where you might meet a more sketchy crowd and pay higher surcharges. How safe is the EuraRail?
It's very safe and clean and you'll be fine. Here's a trick, though, just in case anyone DOES bother you. Keep a set of keys in your pocket. If anyone bothers you, stick your hand into your pocket, and push the keys in between your fingers in a fist. If you need to defend yourself, just stick the whole thing in their gut hard, and twist. Perfectly legal. Perfectly sane. Good protection. Never needed it. I lived on the trains, a twenty-year-old woman ALONE for three months. Never a problem. Slept with complete strangers. Six of us to a cabin. Never a problem. People are great.
In Western Europe rail travel is extremely safe. In fact, statistically it is FAR safer than driving. Assaults on trains are extremely rare. What you do need to worry about, though, is pickpocketing on some crowded routes. But if you take precautions, such as attaching your wallet and bag to chains, even that is not a problem.

In Eastern Europe it is a little more dangerous. Pickpocketing is endemic and occassional harassments do happen, even if they are unlikely.
