i traveled all over france using trains this past xmas break. I went from Cassis (in the south) to Rennes (in the northwest) and it was great! It's a great way to see all of the country as your traveling and cheaper than flying. Good luck and have fun :)
- tolls are very expensive on the highways, so is gas, so car is easy (great roads/highways) but not cheap
- there are some buses, between major cities but they are usually longer and probably more expensive than a US bought europass. i would not even consider it
- any city that has a TGV link will be faster to reach than taking the plane (when you include time to get to/from airport, security etc.)
rail is clearly the way to go unless there is a railway strike planned (2-4 times a year, check, they usually warn 2 weeks in advance)Traveling from city to city in France?
Train is the easiest way to travel in France, and you can get just about anywhere by train. The fast trains, TGV, go to the major centres. Eurail sells passes for use on European trains. While a France Eurail Pass will allow you to travel on French trains, you will still need to pay seat reservation fees. the pass can pay for itself if you're doing several very long trips, but you might find that point-to-point tickets are more economical.
by far the eurostar is the best,fa test and cheapest if you book in advance
you also have the normal train and buses
