Do I need to book an Italy train pass and a Norway train pass? How do I get from place to place?
We're flying in to Rome, 3 travelers, we'stay in Rome a few days, make our way though northern Italy then head to Norway to Oslo, Lofoten and the Fjords.
Full Trip dates are July 21 through August 11...or around there.
We need inner Europe transportation advice!!! And any must see places if they come to mind :)
Thanks!Eurorail travel from Italy to Norway?
Just as a warning, train travel within Norway is limited (mostly due to natural barriers). There are no trains as far north as Lofoten, so you'll have to fly, drive or take a bus. You'll also have to take other transport to see most of the fjords, because they often aren't closely connected to railways. You can get from Oslo to Bergen or Stavanger without problem, but from there you'll need alternate transport. To go north from Bergen, you have to take an 8 hour train ride back to Oslo, then continue north. You can see a route map here:

The German train site is one of the better for booking long journeys:

You normally can't book the entire journey online though, so you'll need to call a local number for them (found on the site) or book each leg individually. The shortest route I found is Rome - Munich - Hamburg - Copenhagen - Gothenburg - Oslo, which takes about 40 hours.
You could try a Eurail pass, the Global pass allows travel in any of the countries that accept it during a certain time period. Since Germany doesn't border Italy, I don't think you could use a Select pass (5 countries). It may be cheaper booking the tickets separately, in advance, though.

Just order a Eurorail pass, though order it asap as they take a long time to come in, then just book tickets when you get into the trainstations. Trust me, it's toally easy and the best/least expensive way to go.
Oh, and though they're totally tempting, stay away from the Italian port cities like Venice then, as they're totally overcrouded as they're the only respit from the over-heated cities in the summer. Oh, and Bologna is totally cool if you get to stop there on your way north, totally worth an overnight as it's a quaint true Italian experience.
Have fun!
