My friend and I would love to travel around Europe for a month. How pricey would it be?

We don't want to stay anywhere nice. We'd love to travel on the Eurorail. My friend and I would love to travel around Europe for a month. How pricey would it be?
You want to go in FOUR YEARS!!!??? Now is NOT the time to start planning your budget too carefully! So much can change!

I would say start putting as much away towards the trip as you can. Plan on needing at least $2000US, for while you are there, plus airfare, which is running around $1000 these days, so figure $1500 or so, with inflation...more if the price of fuel keeps going up, but it may not be that much at all, just thinking in terms of inflation and in case the $ and 鈧?keep going the same direction they have been.

I would suggest opening a special account just for the trip. That way you can forget that money is available, and only deposit and watch it grow. NEVER touch that money until it's time to go.

You can go fairly expensive, or very cheaply, and there is so much to consider! I did my backpacking trip on a shoestring. I rarely ate full meals, mostly just bread and cheese that I carried with me and picnicked wherever I was hungry. I kept a water bottle that I had bought at the beginning of the trip, and kept refilling it with tap water.

As for the Eurail pass, (and there is no such thing as a train service called Eurail. it's only the pass - each country has their own train service, and when you buy the pass, you get a map of the routes covered in the service) you need to decide, and know that whatever research you do today will DEFINITELY change before you get there, whether the pass is really going to be cost - effective. You need to compare the prices of the individual tickets you plan to use, and compare that to the price of the pass. Then you need to add, if you are planning to use it, the cost of reserving seats. And there are supplements (required) on certain routes (it should tell you what they are on the website: raileurope.com) and then decide it there's a possibility that you are going to change your minds and decide to add an extra trip or two, and add that in, then compare to the pass you are thinking of. And even that isn't as easy as it used to be. It used to be the Youth pass (2nd class, 30day) and the adult pass (1st class 2 week). And that was all. The number of options, now, are enough to boggle the mind.

I think, I just blanket bought the one country pass for us, last summer, and now, after reconsidering, I figure I paid too much, and should have simply bought the tickets individually. But we only took 4 trips. My friend and I would love to travel around Europe for a month. How pricey would it be?
I hate to say this, but this is a really bad time to travel to Europe. The conversion rates are hideous right now due to our struggling economy.

Also, hostels aren't always the cheapest options. I have found some cheap bed and breakfasts in my travels that were nicer and cheaper than hostels.

It really depends on where you want to go in Europe...
