Planning to visit Amsterdam,Paris,Rome,Venice,Vi鈥?in ten days.Should I get a Eurorail pass?why?

This is my first trip to Europe and I'v planned to spend almost two days for each cities. Thank you for your answers.Planning to visit Amsterdam,Paris,Rome,Venice,Vi鈥?in ten days.Should I get a Eurorail pass?why?
I would do this a little differently and start in either Vienna or Amsterdam if you can find reasonable flights. The reason I would choose that is that it allows you to take advantage of night trains going between Vienna and Venice, Venice and Rome, and Rome and Paris. There are no direct trains between Paris and Vienna. You would need to take a train from Paris to Frankfurt or Munich to get a night train from there. The night trains have a couple of advantages - much of the time you use for travel is time you'll be sleeping anyway and you don't have to pay for a hotel/hostel that night.

If you have a specific schedules, you're probably better off getting individual tickets in advance to take advantage of available discounts; if you buy the tickets the day of travel, the pass may save you a little. For example, the night train between Paris and Rome (or vice versa) costs 127 euro at the base fare. But if you buy a ticket early enough to get the Smart price discount, you can get a berth in a 4 bed compartment for 45 euro. With a Eurail pass, you still have to make a reservation for this train and pay an additional 45 euro. You're actually losing out with the pass in this case. There are other discount levels when the smart price sells out.

There is a great site on train travel here in Europe that explains the passes in detail and provides links to the various national train sites - http://www.seat61.com/ . Read the section about rail travel here in Italy in particular - note that that assumes you are paying full fare and not getting the discounts for early purchase.

The German train site is good for finding schedules throughout Europe: http://www.bahn.com/i/view/USA/en/index.鈥?/a>Planning to visit Amsterdam,Paris,Rome,Venice,Vi鈥?in ten days.Should I get a Eurorail pass?why?
You probably want to do it in the order: Amsterdam, Paris, Vienna, Venice, Rome (or opposite that).

Traveling around Europe is easy and inexpensive by train, but it's very costly using other transportation. Eurorail allows you flexibility and almost unlimited train use on the days that you use. It gets you quickly one place to another and you can access most of Europe by train, so you aren't missing anything at all. You may want to get a select pass; you select the countries you visit and only pay for the number of countries and the days that you use.

For example, for 4 countries:

Eurail Select Pass 4 Countries

Train travel in three bordering European countries

鈥?Design your own tailor-made Pass. Choose聽from 23 countries!

鈥?You get unlimited* first class rail travel in 4 bordering countries.

鈥?25聽or聽younger? Buy a budget-friendly聽second class聽Youth Pass.

鈥?For groups of two or more there is a special Saver Pass.

For youth pass (under 26):

5 days within 2 months US$ 329

6 days within 2 months US$ 359

8 days within 2 months US$ 419

10 days within 2 months US$ 479

Adult pass (over 26):

5 days within 2 months US$ 509

6 days within 2 months US$ 559

8 days within 2 months US$ 649

10 days within 2 months US$ 745

Those days can be used separately (not continuous), so that would probably be the best option for you since you plan on staying a few days each location. Make sure you purchase the Eurorail before you leave for Europe!!
