How good is eurorail for getting around western Europe?

EuroRail is an excellent way to travel around western Europe -- and a good part of eastern Europe, too.

Most countries subsidize rail travel, so the ticket costs are very reasonable by US standards -- except in the UK, where trains cost more than in continental Europe AND the dollar is so incredibly weak that UK costs in general are really high right now.

Eurorail passes offer a great savings over buying tickets for each trip, so be sure to research the passes available. (Like for one week, two weeks, one month -- depending on how long you will be travelling).

Don't rule out parts of eastern Europe. Trains are excellent for seeing Slovenia, Croatia, and the Czech Republic, for instance.
Excellent. I'd say that travelling by eurorail around western Europe is as convenient and popular as travelling by car in north America.

Dude, go see "Hostel" man! you'll never go to Europe again! Those Europeans, they are evil! I hear they eat babies in Eastern Europe to like, consume their souls or something. It's totally gnarly! And the French, they completely hate Americans. In each French village, they designate someone's house as the "fun house" (oui, oui, eet iz tru I tell u!) where they set up a torcher chamber in their basements. Then, they pick out the most unsuspecting American tourist they can find (not to hard I'm afraid), get them drunk on wine until they pass out, and then do their worst to him in that chamber. And then they make crepes out of their skin and fine French pastries out of their fat! So when you eat a croissant or French toast or something, you're really eatting an American! I swear to God it's true! Look it up on the internet. I think I saw it on my space or something.
