Any Advice on Cougar Deterrents?

There was a picture in the paper of two cougars lounging in someone's yard about a mile away. We live out in the boondocks at the foothills of a mountain by the Olympic National Park. We have deer, coyotes, raccoons, and the smaller rodents in our yard often. It is close to an elk habitat and is in a no firearm area. So I am somewhat worried about cougars. Our garage is about 200 feet from our house and has a lot of trees. I jangle my keys to make noise at night. What are some other things I can do to avoid a cougar encounter? What are some things besides standing still with eye contact, or making myself look bigger to discourage them?Any Advice on Cougar Deterrents?

Hey this may help you feel a little better.

(I live in WA too!! How funny)
I would take an air horn and a vial of pepper spray with me on those walks to the garage. But I'd also pay someone to move the garage closer to the house.

You should also consider having a floodlight system mounted on your house and garage that can be turned on by a switch near your front door so that the way is well lit before you go out. Turn it on, wait a few minutes, then leave the house.

Paintball gun - Loud, effective and Non-Lethal.

I recommend a "Spyder VS-1" It's cheap and reliable.
I know on the army base to keep all the creatures at bay they spread human hair all over the grounds and have for 100 years it seems to work so my son said he was stationed there!
