Please? it would be intersting to know i searched and i didnt find any anwsers and if possible can you list the website?
And whats the Purpose of the St. Louis Arch? woundering againnn ..Thanks :DDDWhy is the St. louis Arch the shape of a parobloa?
The Gateway Arch is not the shape of a parabola. It's a catenary curve, which is the shape a chain takes when held upside down. A parabola is similar to a catenary curve, but is related to trajectory. A catenary curve is the most stable curve for a free-standing structure.
The Gateway Arch symbolizes the gateway to the west.
Most answers given are very good. I know I'm not giving you the answer you're looking for but I will give you a little bit of construciton history...(you'll hear this if you buy the video)
First, when construction began, the insurance companies predicted that a certain number of lives would be lost in the construciton. No lives were lost.
Secondly, a safety net was placed between the north and south legs of the Arch. It ended up giving workers a false sense of security in that one day someone asked if it would relaly catch a fallen worker. Someone volunteered to jump but was discouraged. A sack of sand was tossed over the edge of the Arch and plummeted to the ground 600+ feet below...SPLAT! It didn't even come close to landing in the safety net.
It is illegal for a sky diver/parachutist to attempt to land on top of the Arch or sail between the legs of the Arch; it's also illegal for aircraft to fly between the legs as well. Many years ago, one parachutist did successfully land but wind blew him off the top and his chute failed to open. He plummeted to his death and landed at at his wife's feet.
Each year since 1981, the Arch has been the backdrop of St. Louis' fireworks display ending each night of Fair St. Louis, set off from barges on the Mississippi River. It's a beautiful site. Why is the St. louis Arch the shape of a parobloa?
The technical term for the shape of the design is "cantanary curve". See link below.
The Arch is a national monument (the tallest) and is symbolic as St. Louis being the gateway to the west.
If you go to the US Park Service web site (sorry, I don't have the address handy), you will find wonderful information about the Arch! It includes the competition to design a monument, the actual design, the building of the arch, and lots of great photos!
It does symbolize the gateway to the west... as west of St. Louis was the Wild West way back. You can also take a cool elevator ride up to the top and look out over the city/ river. The car rotates as you go up!
its the gateway arch.
