The engineers used principles of mechanics of materials, which uses physics and math, to design it be strong and sound in construction. The foundations were sunk 60 feet into the ground as a part of withstanding earthquakes and severe strong winds, and it can sway up to 1 inch in a 20 mph wind, even though the specifications designed it to be able to take a sway of 18 inches.
